CHAOS ANO CONFUSION CAN BE GOOD FOR BUSINESS,

so long as they are not features of your business. The founders of Medsource, a medical billing company, are thriving on that principle.

They sign up clients by offering to take the mess of medical billing out of the doctors' offices, so the M.D.s can focus on their patients.

"Staff in doctor's offices spend all day on the phone with insurance companies trying to collect payments," explains Medsource co-founder Yvonne Araujo. "And ii keeps getting more complex as managed care grows," adds her partner Beth Carins.

But just offering relief from the billing sometimes isn't enough. "Some doctors don't like to outsource because they worry about losing control of any patient information," Carins explains.

To sweeten the pot, Medsource offers a win-win situation on the money side. The company gets paid based on its success in collections.

And it has done quite well. "For one client, we were able to double their collections," Carins says. "They weren't doing any follow-up on bills the insurers didn't pay."

Araujo, 32, and Carins, 38, started Medsciurce.in September 1999 a􀂄 11 years al medical firm. "There were changes as the practice was growing and we decided it was time to go," Araujo says. "II had started small but we were losing some control' as new ,people were brought in;· Carins adds.

Some of the doctors also didn't like the new set up and left the practice. They became the first Medsource clients.

Both Carins and Araujo say they like the freedoms of running their own shop. "The

best thing is you don't have to answer to anybody. You can do your own time management," CaJins says.

That doesn't mean less work, however. "There are times when we're doing serious overtime," says Araujo. "In our old jobs we could do 8-to-5 and clock out."

As long as insurance companies keep writing fine print and contesting claims, the Medsource.
